Back home again

The St. James' crew has returned safely after an uneventful all day trip yesterday. We all agree that this was one of the best trips ever, with an awesome group of people --both host families and fellow workers.

Our high points and low points: for Sylvia, the high point was being a team leader, and the low point not finishing the bathroom project that her team worked on. Katie's high point was being on Sylvia's team, and low point also not completing the work on their project. Barbara's low point was leaving Grace House, and high point was the way the group worked together and the incredible host families.

Cathy was very moved by the faith and the music of the people we met and worked with; low point, as always, was the heat and humidity.

We thank the people of Episcopal Appalachian Ministries, Grace House, and all the host families and their friends. Most of all, we thank the people of St. James' whose generous donations make this trip possible each year.

Blessings to all!

Still out of contact

A huge thunderstorm blew through here yesterday afternoon and took out the electricity until the early morning hours. We will try to catch up later after our last day of work! All are well, and looking forward to returning home tomorrow.

Out of contact

We are suffering from spotty internet satellite service as well as very little cell reception, so hope to blog to you all soon about the last couple of days. Here is the way Sylvia and Katie have devised to send text messages!

In the groove

We are getting in the swing of our jobs now; everyone has materials and as much of a plan as we are able. Today my team completed the support for the deck and tomorrow we will begin the railing. Our homeowner is making lunch for us tomorrow and we are looking forward to a break from the usual sandwiches. It is hot and very humid, so we take a lot of water breaks and sometimes sit in the shade for a bit admiring the many butterflies there are around here. (CLD)

Today was a very successful because we were able to cut the sheetrock and put it up against the wall. We were also able to do some of the wiring so that we are able to do the plumbing tomorrow. We are making a lot of progress and I am excited for what we can do tomorrow. S.O

My day was very similiar to Sylvia's so I'm not going to repeat what she just said. I'll add a little bit more though. We woke up early again this morning and ran. Then tonight we got to play our favorite card game which is Chairman Mao. Its a confusing game trust me. Okay I'm tired so I'm going to sleep. Excited for tomorrow! (KL)

Day Uno

Well today was pretty good i guess...just kidding everything is great so far. Turns out I am in group! We are so excited to be together. This morning Cathy, Sylvia and I went jogging/walking at 6 am. We will see how long that lasts. This year we are working on a bathroom in a trailer. We have made good progress so far and began some of the plumbing and electric. We have already hit some problems but we will find a way to work around them. Sylvia is an amazing leader...most of the time. :)(K.L.)

Today was a very eventful, yet frustrating day. Katie, Cathy and I hauled our butts out of bed and went for a run at 6am. Who would have thought I would have been up that early? It was the highlight of my day... not haha actually Cathy made me go out with her since they have been seeing a ton of bears we have to do the buddy system. I made Katie come with me because I knew she would go. Later that day, we went out to our sites and began to work. Our task is to wire the bathroom and do all the plumbing inside the bathroom. In the beginning I was skeptical about the work because I know so little about plumbing, but with a little guidance and faith, my group made me feel more confident about the project. Things were very slow to start off because we discovered a lot rotted wood on the trailer, so we had to replace all of them before we could really start work. By the end of the day we were able to put in the cabinet and the top of the sink. Katie is in my group and the work is a much better experience considering I am group leader. It is nice to have a familiar face to help me out when I am a bit lost. She is such a good follower... most of the time :) (S.O)
It was a hot and sunny day at our worksite, where we are repairing and adding a railing to a front deck to make it safe. Team Cathy was assisted by Gordon Bowen, the new Executive Director of EAM. He is a hard worker! Mountain Engineer Jerry made sure we had what we needed to get started, and gave us tips to make the work easier. We are stabilizing the deck with new supports and having fun getting to know each other and the homeowner. The team is from Michigan, Massachusetts, Virginia and New Jersey. The roads to the worksite are quite an experience in driving. (Don't worry, Louise!) (CLD)

Sheetrock, plumbing and light fixtures O'my! Day one of work and my team is finishing a job started last week. Mudding sheetrock, sanding, trimming, painting, connecting sinks and faucets and installing new light fixtures. We will then have a small roof project to stop a leak where three sections of the house come together-sound familiar to anyone???? We are having a great time making new friends and reconnecting with old friends. Our host is pictured here, she is a wonderful lady that is very much enjoying having people to talk to. She is holding a purse that she has sewn from samples of upholstery materials that she picks up at the local stores, she is hoding one. She is very talented and loves to tell you all about her family and life. Tonight we have a guest speaker who is going to tell us all about the mining industry in this area; should be very interesting to hear their side. Looking at these mountainsides and already knowing a little it will probably be like BP explaining what a great industry oil is to the resisdents of the Gulf. It is great having Cathy back and we are enjoying a few stories of her sabbatical when time is allowed. (BMW)

Anticipation...

I just received fabulous news that I am going to be team leader. This means that I am going to be in charge of a project on one of the sites. I am so excited because I am going to be able educate new people on what the project may entail. I am not exactly sure what I am going to be doing, but I am up for the challenge. This is a huge honor because I did not think this was going to be happen so soon. I cannot wait for the work week to start so that I can put my talents to work! (S.O.)

Things at Grace House are fantastic as usual. The people here this week seem really nice. Most were here last year so it is great to see them again! Tonight we have a meeting to find out what projects we will be working on. Should be interesting! :) (K.L.)

This morning we worshipped with the people of St. John's Episcopal Church in Roanoke. They were so welcoming, and some remembered us from last year! Tonight we get our assignments and get to work in the AM. There are 24 of us here from age 15 to 81, old friends and new. I sure hope I don't have to go in any crawl spaces. The camp director asked if I was afraid of snakes -- not a good sign. (CD)

We are here and it is awesome. We were greeted with great smiles and huge hugs. We will divide up into our groups later tonight and find out what our jobs will be. I am sure it will be a busy week. (BMW)
